70% alcohol means 30% water
A few years ago I upgraded my laptop, leaving me with a MacBook Pro from 2014 which was on what I thought were it's last legs. Its substitute was a heavy gaming laptop which could run all the programs I needed for work and play 20 year old isometric games at ultra. The days were full of rejoicing, until I needed to lug the 3kg thing around in my bag on work trips.
Having been torn from the freedom of mobility, I realised that my old MacBook could still be of use. I installed Fedora on it, and to my surprise it worked even better than when it had Mac OS. I praised the Omnissiah, but a problem remained: the battery was basically useless.
Having been considering swapping it for ages, I bit the bullet, and with tears streaming a purchase was made.
As soon as it arrived, I prepared the table, read the instructions and put myself to work.
Pouring copious amounts of 70% alcohol I worked my way beneath the batteries, tearing them out. Seeing as the laptop has never been opened, I took the opportunity to wipe everything (with the alcohol) and blow all the dust out.
This is when I began to feel like something was off. Doesn't alcohol usually dry quickly? I waited.
With care I placed the new battery in, slapped a mental purity seal upon it and performed a silent prayer to the Machine God.
Connecting the charger showed a green light, which turned to orange. There is power flowing here. I booted Fedora and the login screen appeared.
Praise be to the Omnissiah... that is, until I tried to type in my password.
Enter wasn't working. Shift wasn't working. Space worked on and off. Everything written was uppercase, numbers were symbols. I restarted, rebooted, and waited. The same thing happened. Confused, distraught, I unplugged everything and just stood there.
That is when it dawned upon me. If it's 70% alcohol, what is the other 30%? Of course it's water.
Did I just pour water allover this old relic's internals? I apparently did.
With haste I opened it back up and did a pass with a blow dryer on cold. Now we wait, again.
Edit 1: It's been a few hours. I booted up again but no change. I can't login.
Edit 2: Another hour passed. I sought wisdom from the Omnissiah (Gemini). I was counselled to press some buttons while it boots up to reset something called an SMC. Login has been successful but it appears the left-shift is KIA. I think we're safe, but I'm going to leave the back open just incase and hopefully I'll be able to boot in again.
Edit 3: We are not in the green, the issue repeats itself. I shall wait 48hrs and try again. Otherwise... we're going to have to perform surgery on this guy.
