you can tell when people are angry

There are days where you can feel that people are angry.

When I worked night shifts at a hostel in London, I always kept an eye out for what the walk was like on the way there. Often you could feel there was a tension in the air. People felt irritable, ready to go, rearing to claw at eachother.

This helped me prepare for what often was a night which I would need to call the police. Being prepared mentally this way felt necessary and often helped me avoid bad situations.

Today Lisbon felt this way.

Getting off the metro we saw a fight. One person fell forward, the other leaned onto them and hit them in the face with hand and foot. It finished as promptly as it started. Its suddenness shook everyone.

Walking around town, you could hear people mutter as they walked around, horns blaring, people shouting from inside their cars, walkways crowded.

These days it's hot in the sun, cold in the shadow, and violently windy. The abrupt gusts of wind slash at you with invisible frozen knives, pushing you off balance as it moves over you. The trees bend, doors whistle and windows slam shut. Everything feels unstable, and it seems that everyone is being jostled about.
